All grassroots sports teams can benefit from Sustainable Leaders in Sport.
The core design is for all teams that typically play on grass pitches (football, cricket, rugby, hockey), however we will be rolling out a platform that is bespoke to arena sports in due course.
If you are involved in arena sports and passionate about sustainability we would love to hear from you.
Individual sports teams don’t typically own a clubhouse or sports facility so a Net Zero carbon goal wouldn’t be a good place to start.
The opportunity for individual teams lies in two key areas: small behaviour changes and advocacy. Small behaviour changes include actions like asking all players to use refillable water bottles, share lifts to fixtures, and consider more sustainable kit suppliers. The advocacy bit comes into play when teams contact local councils to request better provision of recycling facilities, or share sustainability messaging on social media, for example.
Consider a scenario in which multiple teams send emails to the local council asking for better provision of recycling bins – simply speaking up soon becomes a powerful tool for change when acting together under a scheme like SLIS.
We provide you with a set of pre-populated templates that can be copied and pasted into the body of an email. All you need to do is personalise it and you’re good to go. An example would be a letter to your local council asking them to provide better bike storage so players can cycle to games, thus cutting carbon emissions.
An experienced consultant from E4environment will typically want to see the goals you have set via SLIS, and then will help you prioritise these goals in the context of your club and what’s possible. It will likely be a virtual meeting for one hour at the start of your SLIS membership. Think of them as your sustainability coach.
Once you have completed both steps of the SLIS process, email SLIS@gmail.com with the name of your club or organisation and copy of your Green Goals pdf attached. We will then return a digital version of your certificate within 5-10 working days.
First you will need to register and login.
The SLIS platform contains two steps as set out in your dashboard.
1 – Green Sports Guidance
2 – Green Goalsetting
These steps are derived from formal Environmental Management System (EMS) processes and Green Achiever Scheme accreditation frameworks, but tailored to suit grassroots sports teams. SLIS is completed 100% online and you will receive a Green Guidance Report, SLIS Sustainability Action Plan, templates and other membership benefits
For teams you should be able to complete both steps in under 2 hours.
For clubhouse and stadium levels, you will require some information to hand, ideally:
– Energy bill information (are you with a renewable energy supplier?)
– Your carbon footprint (if you have it)
We recommend you complete this process at the clubhouse/stadium/sports facility so you can answer as accurately as possible.
If your represent an individual team that doesn’t own any buildings or sports grounds then TEAM is the right level for you to get started. This focuses on small behaviour changes around waste and lift sharing, plus advocacy – using your influence to make a difference to the community.
If your team or club owns, or has influence over, a building such as a clubhouse or pavilion, then CLUBHOUSE is right for you. This will focus on energy saving and identifying opportunities to reduce the impact of minor grounds maintenance operations.
If your team or club owns, or has influence over, buildings such as a multi-purpose sports facility (including offices and function rooms) and sports grounds (pitches, fields etc) then STADIUM is the right level. This will focus on energy saving, resource use, biodiversity, supply chain, waste management and green travel.
